At home with the Lacandon Maya
Instructor: Lola Reid Allin
February 13 | 1-3 p.m.
Have you visited Maya archaeological sites and wondered what happened to the Ancient Maya? Come with Lola on a virtual excursion deep into the rainforest jungle of Chiapas, Mexico to experience a few days in the life of an extended Lacandon Maya family in the tiny pueblo of Naha’. Once isolated and accessible only on foot or horseback, travelers today can make the journey by vehicle. However, because the 189-kilometer adventure from San Cristóbal de las Casas requires six hours over rough roads, Naha’ is not flooded with tourists. We’ll be inside the family home virtually, living as family members.
Via Lola’s personally narrated PowerPoint presentation, you will learn about:
—Birth, childhood, courtship, marriage
—Northern vs Southern Lacandon groups
—Intermarriage between Maya groups
—Ancient and Modern Maya religious beliefs
—Religious pilgrimages to the nearby Ancient Maya archaeological sites of Yaxchilán, Bonampak, and Palenque
—Culture in transition
—Ecotourism villages in the Lacandon rainforest
Lola Reid Allin has explored more than 65 countries in depth, including the Mayalands of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, and has lived with the Q’eqchi, Mopan, Mam, and Lacandon Maya in their homes. She is an award-winning photographer and author whose work has appeared in national and international publications, including National Post, National Geographic, Globe & Mail, Verge: Travel with Purpose, In web page, Toronto Star, Grapevine, and Santa Fe Centre for Photography.
