Chasing the Light: Exploring
John Singer Sargent Watercolors
Instructor: Shannon Troxler
March 10, 12, 13 | 1-3 p.m.
In this 3-day class we will explore the exuberant and innovative watercolors of John SingerSargent. During his lifetime, Sargent was most famous for his accomplished oil portraits of high society, but it is his dazzling watercolors that appeal to our modern sensibilities. With hisumbrella and travel palette and an entourage of friends Sargent painted the canals of Venice and the squares and gardens of Europe and the Middle East. We will explore his expressive brush strokes, avant-garde techniques and daring compositions that made a lasting impression on the watercolor medium.
The first two classes will be a lecture series, on the third day you are invited to bring your paints and sun hat and join Shannon for a watercolor demonstration in the courtyard followed by an informal painting class.
