Galeria Atotonilco
Instructor: Susan Page
March 19 | 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Widely regarded as the finest exhibition of Mexican folk art in the entire country, Galeria Atotonilco is 6,000 square feet filled with authentic, high-quality folk art from all over Mexico. On your visit to this gallery, you will see wood carvings, ceramics, baskets, paper mâché, lacquer, a large variety of textiles, masks, yarn paintings, graphic art and much more. The gallery also exhibits antique furniture from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.
The visit will include a short talk on the history and significance of folk art in Mexico, an introduction to each of the sections of the gallery, and a tour of the owner’s private collection, housed in an architecturally interesting house that has been featured in magazines and books and an episode of “Extreme Homes.”
This gallery is one of Trip Advisor’s top 10 attractions in San Miguel. The gallery is educational, but it is not a museum. There are many beautiful things available for sale and every purchase supports an indigenous artist and a traditional arts village.
