Mexican Cinema and its Richness
Instructor: Jesús Ibarra
February 16, 18 | 1-3 p.m.
Taught by Jesús Ibarra, the Academic Dean of the Instituto Allende, this is a repeat of one of our most popular courses. Lavishly illustrated by film clips of movies with subtitles in English, this course will take us through the entire development of the Mexican movie industry, the richness of which is often unknown to non-Mexicans. It will include the beginning of Mexican movies in the 1930s, the revolution in Mexican movies in the 1940s, the New Mexican Cinema movement in the 1970s, the temporary collapse of Mexican cinema in the 1980s, and the resurgence of the Mexican movie scene in the decades since 1990. He will include movies that were filmed in San Miguel.
Jesús Ibarra is a scholar and prolific author. His recent history of San Miguel de Allende is considered the current definitive history on the topic. He is currently the Academic Dean of the Instituto Allende. As such, he is managing a rapidly growing student body.
