El Nigromante: Mexico and San Miguel's Transformative 19th-Century Figure

Natalie Taylor has written a biography of Ignacio Ramírez, also known as "El Nigromante," one of the greatest Mexican intellectuals of the 19th century. She will discuss his life, which encompassed a turbulent and transformative period in Mexico from 1818 to 1879. Beginning with the origins of San Miguel de Allende, where Ramírez was born, the course will examine the aftermath of the War of Independence, the post-Reforma period, the First and Second Mexican Empires, Benito Juárez, Antonio López de Santa Anna, and the U.S. invasion during the Mexican–American War, which began in 1846. Ramírez was not only part of this complicated history but also instrumental in the transformative changes that occurred during the period.

 

Natalie Taylor is a journalist and contributor to Atención News, a local newspaper. She has published several books about San Miguel de Allende, where she resides with her husband, Dennis. Her latest book is the biography of an important Mexican intellectual who transformed Mexico in the 19th century: The Necromancer of San Miguel de Allende: The Life and Times of Ignacio Ramírez.
