The Lifelong Learning Program will visit Another Face of Mexico Mask Museum in San Miguel de Allende. Owner and curator Bill LeVasseur has spent more than 25 years amassing an extraordinary collection of more than 650 Mexican ceremonial masks. Through visits to often remote Indigenous communities and his observation and documentation of masked dancing, he has also acquired extensive knowledge of masks and masked dancing that he is eager to share.
In 2006, Bill and his wife, Heidi, opened Another Face of Mexico Mask Museum to the public. Accompanying the mask collection are texts, photographs, and videos showing more than 40 different dance ceremonies. All masks in the museum have been used in Indigenous dance and ceremonial performances and therefore are considered authentic by collectors.
We will begin with an introduction to the museum in the living room of Casa de la Cuesta, the bed-and-breakfast where the museum is located. Bill will then lead a guided museum tour. There will be time for refreshments and discussion at the end. The museum is at Cuesta de San José 32, Colonia Azteca, just a 10–15-minute walk from the Historic Center and El Jardín.
